Our Heritage

Eureka Financial Group Pty Ltd was incorporated on December 16, 1993 (originally as Phegan Cook Pty Ltd). The founding adviser principals were Mike Phegan and Greg Cook. The business was initially located at St Leonards, then at Chatswood, then Crows Nest.

Mike Phegan had enjoyed a long association with Colonial Mutual Life. He joined as a life insurance agent in Merriwa NSW in 1969. Mike says of those times “I always felt, if you do the right thing by your client, and you are loyal to those you work with, the rest will come back to you”. Greg Cook, married to Mike’s youngest daughter Maria, had been working for four years as a Sales Engineer in Sydney and Perth for Philips, the electronics company. Mike encouraged Greg to enter the financial services industry, and Greg began his own Colonial Mutual agency in Hurstville in November 1992. It was a period of introspection for the financial advice industry, and post economic recession, a period of contraction for Colonial Mutual. Mike says “Greg was a self-motivated person and willing to pursue life’s opportunities, and he advanced in the business”.

Dot Cambey (nee Watts) joined the business in 1995 as an Administrator. Dot began her career with the State Bank of NSW. Around that time Colonial rebranded and franchised its financial services intermediaries. The later demutualisation gave a windfall share entitlement to policyholders. During these times the business primarily provided life insurance and investment services, general insurance, and mortgage finance advice. Mike moved to the Blue Mountains and commuted to Sydney four days a week. Greg studied part time and became a Certified Financial Planner that year, and acquired full ownership of Phegan Cook Pty Ltd in 1998, and Mike Phegan fully retired in 2000.

Andrew Jones joined the practice as an adviser in 2002. Andrew was a Certified Practising Accountant and had been working for Prudential (later part of Colonial and the Commonwealth Bank) as a Project Manager, and then as a Paraplanner. Andrew says “I left the security of a well paid corporate job to begin my journey as a self-employed professional and later business owner. It was an exciting time. I was young and ambitious, a bride in full bloom expecting our first child within months of leaving Colonial, as well as building our first home in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. The learning curve was steep, the industry constantly changing but I thrived in the sink or swim environment”.

The Eureka Brand

On February 2, 2005 the company launched the trademarked Eureka brand at a client and industry function in Martin Place. This heralded a new era for the business. The brand was promoted in a new website and an industry leading Financial Services Guide, and the ArchimedesClients offer and EurekaMoments were launched.

The Financial Services Reform Act had brought in a new regulatory environment. Andrew Jones soon developed a reputation as a leading technician in financial planning and as a SPAA Specialist SMSF Adviser. During this time financial planning continued to evolve from a sales-focused industry to a new profession, and Eureka was one of the leaders here. Eureka completely adopted the Financial Planning Association’s (FPA) new remuneration guidelines (from commissions to fees) in 2009 – three years early. The Global Financial Crisis naturally impacted Eureka clients and the industry and the profession, however Eureka continued to add new ArchimedesClients and worked hard on its existing relationships, and continued to reform the way it engaged with its clientele. Greg Cook had an increased role with Eureka’s licensee Financial Wisdom (FW), including as national Chair of the FW Adviser Forum and in peer groups with fellow professionals. He also had an increased role in the media and with the FPA, including as Chair of the National Conference in 2010 and 2011, as a Life Risk Specialist, and as a member of the Conduct Review Commission (the FPA’s disciplinary panel).

In 2010 Evans Financial Solutions merged into Eureka Financial Group, and Ian Evans joined Eureka. Ted Roberts, who was also licensed via Evans Financial Solutions, retired in December 2010.

Eureka at Milsons Point

milsonspoint

In April 2011 Eureka moved to Milsons Point. The office was officially opened on May 13 by Paul Fletcher MP (Member for Bradfield), Mark Rantall (FPA CEO), and Mark Ballantyne (FW General Manager).

EurekaTax (formerly Lovell Jones) became part of Eureka Financial Group. EurekaTax was managed by Chartered Accountant Barry Lovell.

In November 2011 at FW’s conference in Hong Kong, Eureka was awarded as the financial planning Practice of the Year.

Andrew Burnet joined Eureka in October. “AB” has 30 years’ experience in the industry and a wealth of knowledge of the rural sector from operating his own successful practices in Bathurst and Canberra. These days he is based at Alstonville on the NSW Northern Rivers.

Eureka has had a long association with Lindfield District Cricket Club.

Eureka Whittaker Macnaught

In June 2013, in its 20th year, Eureka took responsibility for one third of Whittaker Macnaught’s clientele in Queensland. Whittaker Macnaught had six offices, 60 staff and over $1 billion of funds under advice. From 2007 its ownership structure had changed from Noel Whittaker and Cheryl Macnaught through to Bankwest, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

This more than doubled the size of the existing business, and Eureka renamed its business Eureka Whittaker Macnaught. We have continued the Whittaker Macnaught office in the Brisbane CBD, at 40 Creek Street. Greg and Maria Cook and family relocated to Brisbane for two years at that time.

Noel Whittaker was appointed as Eureka Whittaker Macnaught’s Ambassador.

Eureka Whittaker Macnaught and AZ NGA

In May 2015 Eureka Whittaker Macnaught became the founding Australian firm of AZ Next Generation Advisory Pty Ltd. AZ NGA is backed by Azimut Group, a leading global financial planning and investment firm. Greg Cook is a director of AZ NGA. Azimut is listed on the Milan stock exchange and have a market cap of approximately 3 billion Euro. This has enabled Eureka Whittaker Macnaught to continue to grow and provide even more expertise and options to its clientele.

In September 2015 Eureka Whittaker Macnaught  and AZ NGA took up a large new office in Sydney in the heart of the Sydney CBD, upstairs from the landmark Apple store. Eureka Whittaker Macnaught also continues its office in the Brisbane CBD.

FPA Practice of the Year Nomination

In October 2017, Eureka Whittaker Macnaught was nominated for the Financial Planning Association’s Professional Practice of the Year award.

Greg Cook says, “We are very excited and honoured to be named a finalist for the Award. We work hard to satisfy the needs of our clients and we believe the pioneering work we have done in objectives-based advice is what has helped us to make the finals. Our approach means that from the very first discovery meeting, our clients are set on a pathway to financial success.”

The winner of the FPA Professional Practice of the Year will be announced at the FPA Congress in Hobart on 23 November.

We look forward to continuing to assist our clients with their financial future in the decades ahead.

Why are we different?

Eureka Whittaker Macnaught has lead the financial planning profession’s transition from investment commission to fee for service remuneration.
